The HUD elderly housing project located on Hines Street has been accepted by the HUD area office in Kansas City and is now ready for occupancy. Fourteen of the units had been rented by Tuesday, with the first persons planning to move into the new units on Wednesday.
The housing project was started on September 30, 1982. The developer for the project was Midland Properties of Kansas City. The general Cardinal contractor was Builders, Inc. (Springfield Metal Building Contractors). A building occupancy permit was granted on May 12, 1983. The cost of the project was budgeted by HUD at $1,286,833.
The thirty-five units consist of nine fourplexes of brick construction. Each unit contains one bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and combination dining-living area. The units are equipped with central air, garbage disposal, electric range, refrigerator, and washer-dryer hookups. Windows and sliding doors have thermal pane glass to reduce utilities. The units are carpeted except for the kitchen and bathroom and have emergency assistance call systems in the bathroom and bedroom. There is also an office which contains a laundry room and post office boxes. Four of the units were specially designed for the handicapped. All aspects of the units are suited to the person confined to a wheelchair.
The units are available to single persons or married
couples, with rent based on the income of each individual.
A single person must be sixty-two years old and one of the spouses of a married couple must meet this requirement.
Executive Director of the project, Don Dodson, stated the office would be open five days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dodson stated the renter is responsible for paying rent, gas bill, and electric bill, but that all other services are furnished by the Housing Authority. Applications for the rental units are still being taken.
The project is bordered by Boston Lane to the east, Hines Street to the south, and Evergreen Cemetery to the west.
